Coffee Lingo: Americano

Americano: (n.) a different way to get to a good cup of coffee.

An Americano is made by pulling a double shot of espresso over 6oz of hot water. This creates a coffee drink not unlike a regular mug of drip coffee, but with the taste and body of espresso. The full name for this drink in Italy is “caffè americano,” Italian for “American coffee.” Coffee legend has it that during WWII, soldiers from the U.S. would pour their espresso into hot water to mimic the regular cup of joe they were more used to. Nowadays, many people get their Americanos over ice.

Pro-tip: try a single-origin iced Americano with sparkling water. It just might change your life.
