There’s no place like a busy highway for the holidays. The worthwhile journey towards turkey and mashed potatoes can be long and arduous. AAA predicts that over 1.6 million more people will travel this holiday compared to last, making this the busiest Thanksgiving travel year since 2005.
But don’t freak out! We’re here to help with a few holiday travel tips and coffee recommendations to get you through it.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
- Planes: TSA projects that around 26.8 million people will travel by air this year (4.6% more than last year according to AAA). A little advice: Fly out earlier in the week. According to AAA, the Monday before Thanksgiving is the best option for travelers. Not only is it a lighter travel day, but it also has the lowest average ticket price prior to the holiday.
- Trains: According to AAA, other travel modes (trains, buses, cruise ships) are slated to go up 1.4% from 2018. A little advice: Same rules apply as flights. Travel earlier in the week to avoid being on a packed train (because scattering your things over two seats on a train is one of life’s simple pleasures).
- Automobiles: 49.3 million drivers are slated to hit the road this year (the most since 2005). Per usual, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is expected to be the busiest travel day on the road. Wednesday afternoon is thought to be especially bad, with trips slated to take four times longer than normal in major metro areas. A little advice: If you have to wait until Wednesday, try to leave in the morning. Even Wednesday morning more closely resembles normal traffic patterns compared to the afternoon rush.
